Restore State Art Funds – The Time Is Now!
The Facts:
The Georgia Council for the Arts budget was cut by 90%.
The Grass Roots Arts Program was defunded and closed.
Georgia ranks 50th in the nation in state arts spending.
Georgia’s per capita rate is six cents (.06) for arts funding.
The Consequences:
Severe cuts in the arts budget has eliminated jobs, cut programs, decreased the total number of GCA Grantees (888 to 66) and caused local arts agencies to lose members, local matching funds and arts in education opportunities. The budget cuts have put local arts councils and arts organizations outside of Atlanta at risk, some have already closed, more will close this year.
The Big Picture:
While no one expects the State to provide PRIMARY funding for the arts, the State DOES need to be a robust PARTNER along with individuals, corporations, foundations and local governments.
Purpose and Priority:
Now is the time to restore state arts funding to save our local arts agencies and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arts council and Georgia’s rich heritage of arts and culture.
